January 2011

75 Years and Counting!

2011 marks the Victoria Foundation’s 75th year in this beautiful city! Join us as we celebrate our past and present accomplishments. Watch for the unveiling of an exciting new program for the future of philanthropy in Victoria. We’re also working on an exciting new feature on our website. We are busy filling it full of stories, people and statistics from our community through the years since 1936. Check back at the end of January to see where we started, where we’ve been and where we’re headed!

Celebration event

As part of our 75th anniversary, the Victoria Foundation’s celebration event will be held on Saturday, June 11th, so save the date! The evening’s keynote speaker will be Tim Brodhead, CEO of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. Canada’s favourite comedian, Rick Mercer presented by Island Savings Credit Union, will entertain with an hour-long presentation. The evening will include a cocktail reception and a three-course dinner. This is not a fundraising event – just come and join us to celebrate! You can purchase your tickets here.

TC10K

Friends, family, Board and staff members of the Victoria Foundation will be running and walking in the TC 10K on Sunday, May 1st. Our team is participating to benefit our signature program – Every Step Counts . It is a running program for people experiencing barriers and challenges with housing, mental health, addiction and other related issues. The program is positive and innovative, and draws on the wide-reaching and long-lasting benefits of running and team work to foster self esteem, confidence, energy and positive growth. If you’d like to get involved, you can find the registration information here.

Adoptions and Permanency Grants Released

Over $127,000 has been awarded to various organizations throughout BC for projects aimed at raising awareness and improving our understanding of adoption and permanency issues, as well as finding healthy homes and permanent connections for BC children and youth. These funds have been allocated by the Victoria Foundation in partnership with the Lex Reynolds Adoptions and Permanency Trust Fund. Find more information about the fund here.

The Alan Roy Africa Schools Fund

We are pleased to announce the Victoria Foundation’s newest fund, the Alan Roy Africa Schools Fund. It was started by Victoria-based architect, Alan Roy. Since climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2010, Alan has returned to Africa, designing and building two primary schools in Tanzania over a period of five weeks.
This donor advised pass-through fund with the Foundation will help Alan share his story and passion with others interested in advancing these goals. Gifts to this fund will be granted for work directly relating to the building and provisioning of these schools and many more in the future.
“By advancing the construction, furnishing and provision of educational equipment for primary schools in East Africa, the Alan Roy Africa Schools Fund with the Victoria Foundation will directly impact the everyday lives of children in the many small, but wide-spread farming communities in this area, predominantly in Tanzania,” says Sandra Richardson, our CEO.
For more information about Alan’s experiences and upcoming projects, please contact Alan Roy at 250-598-4207.
